Yesterday evening I went to an art show at the Billy Wilder Theatre for Mike Mills with my neighbor. They showed a brief video of his work and then had a discussion time between Mike Mills and the Mulleavy Sisters (they make the line Rodarte). But what I really want to talk about is this:
We arrived at the show and since we were early we hung out in the courtyard with all the others attending. Everyone was SO dressed up, by this I mean they were all wearing designer pieces, smoking designer cigarettes, talking about FABULOUS things and trying so very hard to be effortlessly chic. It was quite intimidating and I felt a little out of place.
We were soon guided into the theatre where everyone continued to kiss and greet each other and be absolutely fabulous. THEN Miranda July (who i love love love) gets up to introduce the video and the discussion participants. She starts with Mike Mills (who is also her boyfriend), talks about the things he does and ends by saying "he works hard, all day long, without even thinking about it". Then she talks about the Mulleavy sisters (her friends) and what they do and ends by saying "they works hard, all day long, without even thinking about it".
O.k. so now is where it gets really interesting. So they start to show Mike Mills work and I can't help but feel these undertones of calling bull shit on consumerism. His art is punk in the most real sense of that word. Then... drum roll please....
Mike Mills and the Mulleavy sister's enter: They are totally normal people, unpretentious, awkward artists. The girls were dressed in normal jeans and t-shirts wearing little to no makeup and they were so smart and so awkward (in a fantastic way).
Conclusion: I would rather be an awkward artist than feign rich and fabulous.
p.s. Mark did not go but he said the whole thing reminded him of the Pulp song "Common People"
